Some facts about Hindi
- हिन्दी is the third most spoken language in the world.
- It is written in the devanagari script.
- Hindi is a direct descendent of Sanskrit.
- Article 343 of the Indian Constitution states:
‘ (1)The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script…’
Article 351 of the Indian Constitution directs the Indian government to promote Hindi:
It shall be the duty of the Union to promote the spread of the Hindi language, to develop it so that it may serve as a medium of expression for all the elements of the composite culture of India and to secure its enrichment by assimilating without interfering with its genius, the forms, style and expressions used in Hindustani and in the other languages of India specified in the Eighth Schedule, and by drawing, wherever necessary or desirable, for its vocabulary, primarily on Sanskrit and secondarily on other languages.’
Some 57% of Indians speak Hindi as a first, second or third language.
Hindi is also officially recognised and/or spoken widely in countries where persons of Indian origin have settled. This includes Fiji, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Nepal, South Africa and United Arab Emirates.

Shubh Hindi Diwas.On this day in 1949 the Indian Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi as the official language of Bharat.
